Does it really?

Again today, I heard a saying that just doesn’t make sense to me.

“Everything happens for a reason.”

Does it?  And is this an absolutely true statement? From where did it originate?  Is it a misinterpreted truth?

It is most often used when something goes wrong.  It is most often shared when someone wants to bring hope into a difficult circumstance to someone else.  But does it really bring hope or comfort to someone?

If there is no God, then the meaning is that all matter, all causes, and all affects are arbitrary and somehow there is some kind of pixie dust floating around in our atmosphere that magically manipulates ideas, circumstances, inanimate objects, and even people to follow some kind of cosmic epistomological plan.

Since this is not true, since there is a God, then the resulting hypothesis would be that all things including evil are not the result of human action but God’s plan, not originating in the mind of a person, but in the mind of God.

This is not the God we serve and the God of the universe.  Since when does the killing of anyone lead to a greater good?  What kind of God would kill someones kid in order to make inroads with their parents?  Do the ends really justify the means in every case?

If you break it down a bit and think through what this statement is saying, I’d bet folks would stop saying it.

The origination of this statement might truly come from a poorly translated verse in the King James Version of the Bible. In that version, Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”  So the “all things” seem to have some kind of ability to know when something has gone wrong and know how to “work together for good.”   I can see how this verse has turned into “Everything happens for a reason.”

The NIV folks got it right when they translate the verse as  ”And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”  The grammar requires a logical decision to not make the neuter “things” the subject of the sentence, but the object of God.

The key to God working out the things is that we love Him and walk in the purposes He set out for us.  Let’s do that.  In this 2012 Advent season, let’s purpose to live for Jesus, fondly and humbly remember His first coming, and greatly anticipate His second coming.

Day 27 of 40 Days of Prayer for America

Target: Reform
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Founding Father Quote: “[T]he rational and peaceable instrument of reform, the suffrage of the people.” -Thomas Jefferson

Prayer: Heavenly Father, if we are Your children, we must lift the banner of Your commandments as the standard we unashamedly endorse, both in our public and private lives.  We must endorse the candidates You have put in a position of power by casting our ballots.  It is not only an honor and privilege to do so, but our duty as Christians.  May our judgment no longer be clouded by the mandates of the world, but may we begin to seek You with our whole heart, never settling for second-rate substitutes.  Send Your Holy Spirit to empower us as we seek complete reform in our nation’s infrastructure.  It is only by Your grace that we can prevail.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Target: Righteous Promotion
Proverbs 24:24-25 He who says to the wicked, “You are righteous,” him the people will curse; nations will abhor him.  But those who rebuke the wicked will delight, and a good blessing will come upon them.

Founding Father Quote: “A share in the sovereignty of the state, which is exercised by the citizens at large, in voting at elections is one of the most important rights of the subject, and in a republic ought to stand foremost in the estimation of the law.” –Alexander Hamilton

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the awesome privilege of participating in the governance of this great nation.  Forgive us for taking for granted our freedom to vote, thus neglecting our Christian duty to influence America in the direction of righteousness.  Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.  May the righteous be bold and take a stand, steering this country in a direction of Light, away from the darkness.  May America once again experience the blessings of Almighty God as we turn from our sinful ways.  We ask you, Lord, to lead us by Your truth towards our divine destiny as responsible, righteous citizens of the United States of America.

Day 22 of 40 Days of Prayer for America

Target: Consistency
Titus 1:7-9 …be blameless, as a steward of God, … hospitable, a lover of what is good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled, holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

Founding Father Quote: “The time has come that Christians must vote for honest men and take consistent ground in politics or the Lord will curse them. . . . Christians have been exceedingly guilty in this matter. But the time has come when they must act differently. . . . Christians seem to act as if they thought God did not see what they do in politics. But I tell you He does see it, and He will bless or curse this nation according to the course they [Christians] take [in politics].” -Charles Finney

Prayer: Lord, You are always just, merciful, loving and wise.  Your Word says that You are the same yesterday, today and forever.  You are unchanging and Your mercy is renewed for us each and every morning.  Your love for us never fails.  But we have failed You, and ask for Your forgiveness.  We have not been steadfast in our choices, always making the extra effort to stand for what is right and pure.  May we live according to the example You have sent in Your Word.  May our light so shine before men that all would see and know Your glory, that all would seek Your salvation.  We will no longer allow the mandates of society or busy schedules to allow us to slip into a place of complacency.  From this day forth, we choose to vote according to the commands found in Your Word.  We are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ!  Amen.

Day 19 of 40 Prayer for America 10.16.12

Target: Immigration
Deuteronomy 28:1 Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.

Founding Father Quote: “You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ.  These will make you a greater and happier people than you are.”  -George Washington

Prayer: O Lord, we are guilty of allowing those who despise You to influence and threaten our very way of life.  We started out as a nation aware of the dangers involved in granting citizenship to anyone not honoring You.  Forgive us for foolishly abandoning our watch.  We have been lax in ensuring that those entering our country share our Judeo-Christian values.  This value system has afforded us Your mighty protection, provision and incomparable power…until now.  Lord, give our leaders the wisdom necessary to enforce the good laws already in place, and to reverse the foolish policies that have brought shame to our nation.  Help us eliminate the dangerous philosophies that threaten us as Americans.  We ask that You soften the hearts of those living in this country, by birth or immigration, that we may all enjoy the benefits of living in America.  May we experience what made this nation great in the first place…You!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
